Seven Signs Your Boiler Needs Replacing Before Winter

Most boilers do not fail without warning. They tell you for months first, usually in ways that are easy to ignore until the coldest week of the year. Here are the seven signs we see most often across Bracknell, Ascot, Camberley and the surrounding towns.

1. The pressure keeps dropping

If you are topping the system up more than once or twice a year, something is wrong. The usual causes are a leak on the pipework, a failed expansion vessel, or a pressure relief valve that is passing. Repeated topping up introduces fresh oxygenated water, which accelerates corrosion inside the system.

2. The boiler makes banging or kettling noises

Kettling is the sound of scale and sludge on the heat exchanger causing water to boil locally. It is a strong indicator that the system needs cleaning, and if it has been left long enough, the heat exchanger may already be damaged.

3. Radiators are cold at the bottom

Cold at the bottom and hot at the top means magnetite sludge has settled in the radiator. A power flush plus a magnetic filter normally resolves it, and it should be done before any new boiler goes in.

4. Hot water takes far longer than it used to

A slow hot water response on a combi usually points to a scaled plate heat exchanger or a failing diverter valve. Both are repairable, but on an older boiler the economics often favour replacement.

5. You are calling an engineer more than once a year

Two repairs in a single heating season on a boiler over ten years old usually means the third repair is not far away. Compare the running total against a new installation with up to 12 years warranty before spending again.

6. Your energy bills have crept up without your usage changing

Efficiency drops as a boiler ages and as the system fouls. A boiler running at 78 percent efficiency is burning a lot more gas than a properly commissioned modern condensing boiler.

7. Parts are getting hard to source

Once a manufacturer stops supporting a model, a common failure can leave you without heating for days while a part is chased down. If your engineer starts mentioning obsolete parts, plan the replacement rather than waiting for the breakdown.
